Elon Musk's DOGE is making work a lot more exciting than usual -- in all of the best and worst ways. I'm still employed, for now, and actually aiming to get promoted soon. There's a future where my official job title is composed of seven words instead of the mere six I'm currently rocking. That will show my peers.

There's a new apartment lease on file somewhere out there that bears my name and has financially anchored me in the Midwest for the near-term.

I'm having lots of fun playing Thursday night trivia at neighborhood bars. I really like the geography and history questions.

Japan will see another tech bro begin his obligatory pilgrimage in just a few days. I've learned the Hiragana and Katakana alphabets to prepare, not as impressive as it sounds, and also something I've just realized won't actually do me any good out there. Duolingo marketing won that battle.

I left a note here to provide an update on my New Year's Resolution. The goal was to not half-assedly doodle once per day in a vain effort to improve my artistic abilities. Started off strong but I regret to announce I'm currently about 76 drawings short.

Weather has officially turned to shit in Chicagoland.

Recently launched a website project to little fanfare. My instant-gratification-wired brain did not like that, but it wasn't all for nothing. Experimenting with Cursor and Claude 3.5 Sonnet was genuinely thrilling. It's what all the cool kids are doing these days -- and it simply felt good to ship something for the first time in a while. Watching line charts tick up on Google Analytics is fun. Yay for users!

I have some other projects I want to pursue in the coming months, particularly ones that don't rely on network effects to make me happy, but I know better than to share any specifics here. (Because that would hold me accountable!)

Aside from programming, these last dozen weeks or so I've been house music-pilled, grown explosively on Twitter (+1,200% followers over the last six months!), and purchased technical books for the first time. An exciting opportunity has come along and reinforced my decision to go all in on database theory. The ancient Greeks once said "know thyself", and that I do, so I'm looking forward to letting these things collect dust on the bookshelf. IYKYK.

Working on building a community side projects database. Something between Hacker News and Product Hunt, but ranking strictly passion projects instead of research papers or startup launches. I'm hoping it serves as a great place to find inspiration and get eyes on developers' independent creative work.

Preparing for a camping trip in Banff and a northeastern roadtrip to Montreal, Maine, and Boston this fall. I'm a little worried about the grizzly bears but excited for some lobster. Please reach out if you have local recommendations.

Now reading Anthony Bourdain's Kitchen Confidential, playing Valorant, listening to endless Grateful Dead shows, going for dog walks, not getting around to watching as many movies as I would like to be, casually practicing German, and trying to be good about taking lots of photos.
